Coincidence is an ever present reality for those who have eyes to see – Carl Jung
Tuesday 8 October 2013, around 9pm. Lucy is taking a break from her work on her website. From her sofa, she surveys her immediate surroundings which is mostly filled with books. She notices among them, as she has done on so many other occasions, a box set of memory cards and a book by the famous British memory expert, Dominic O’brien.
She had purchased this box set many months ago and had only ever looked at its contents once before – on the day she’d purchased it. Since then, which was almost every day, every time she noticed it, she would mentally make a note of studying it one day.
This evening, for some reason, she decides to open the box and take a look. Two things seem to make a strong impression on her:
1. That Dominic describes himself as being slow at school but that a television program where Creighton Carvello memorizes the order of a pack of 52 cards in less than 3 minutes inspires him
2. His technique of mapping your house as a memory aide
She spends about 10 minutes viewing the memory cards in the box set and reading less than one page of his little book before returning to work on her website.
Wednesday 9 October 2013, around 9pm. Lucy takes a break from her computer work. She turns the television on and channel flicks. She comes across Russell Howard’s comedy show which she has often flicked over. For some reason, tonight she chooses to stay with the show and enjoys it. Having never watched the full show before, she discovers that a ‘mystery guest’ is a feature at the end of the show. Tonight’s mystery guest is….
Dominic O’brien.
And he takes Russell through…
A house mapping memory exercise.
This is what I call synchronicity!
What is synchronicity? It is the unexpected aligning of two (or more) apparently unrelated events in which a common theme is highlighted and for which there appears to be no ’cause’. In the story above, the 2 events were:
Lucy’s examination of Dominic O’brien’s memory box set and seeing him on television.
Both events in themselves were ‘unexpected’ or out of routine. Lucy had, almost every evening over several months seen but not opened or examined the box. She had also flicked over Russell Howard’s comedy show on almost every other occasion but on this occasion (the evening after she’d opened the box), she not only stopped to watch it, she watched the entire show to discover at the end, a mystery guest who turned out to be Dominic O’brien.
There’s another interesting part to this story. Typically, when Lucy comes across someone who makes an impression on her whether through their books, movies, music or public performance, she almost always looks them up on the internet.
The thought to look up Dominic O’brien on the internet did cross her mind on the evening she opened his memory box set. She was curious to see what he looked like. However, on this occasion, she quite intentionally dismissed it with the vague notion that she would see him without any deliberate action on her part. And she did – on TV and on a show that she would not normally have watched!
Have you any stories of synchronicity? I’d love to hear them!
