Holiday has its roots in ‘holy’ day and ‘holy’ originally referred to the quality of being blessed and whole. To be holy was to keep yourself morally and spiritually whole. So what does Easter Sunday, which is a holy day and whose holiday is carried over to ‘Easter Monday’, mean for those of us who are not religious or church-goers? For whom the word ‘holy’ may be negatively associated with religion, and with that, a suspicion or cynicism toward the value of ‘blessed’ and ‘whole’?
May I suggest this: That during these days, we reconnect with that within us that is inherently blessed and whole, ‘blessed’ connoting happy and whole. That state which we can experience when we attend deeply to our story-less self, you know that self that existed before we learned to think or talk and tell stories? That self that continues to hold us together, all of us. That unified self. For it is only in this self that we will find peace since it is only in this self that all the illusions of separation and difference cease to be.
This veil of separation, the veil of the Temple, between us humans and our higher self or ‘God’/Love, and between all beings, was symbolically ripped when Jesus breathed his last on the cross, as the Easter story goes. In other words, the illusion of separation was symbolically exposed and destroyed.
Today, as we remain physically separated within our individual dwelling places, it is up to us to re-enact, not just symbolically, but personally, transformationally, within our minds, the exposure and destruction of the illusion of our separation. For while we may be physically separated, we have never been separated in essence, in the very core of our being, in our essential nature.
Our physical confinement may be just the thing that forces us to look under the hood of our human existence where is revealed the superficiality and meaninglessness of our differences and thus our reasons for not getting along. To seriously break with our addiction to competition, domination, destruction, denial of basic human needs, unbridled consumption and acquisition and our fawning glorifying of these. It may be just the thing we need to acknowledge such insanity which we have tragically come to accept as ‘normal’.
While there are some who can’t wait for things to return to ‘normal’, I am more eager for us to take this time to fashion within our hearts and minds, a normal that reflects the dignity and pricelessness of every human being and the right of each one to a life of health, comfort and freedom of expression. No exceptions.
There appears within the storms of hardship and losses that many are currently facing (and that many more have faced for shamefully longer), a lightning rod of opportunity for those of us not yet hurled by these storms. Let us grab the rod with mind and heart, thus allowing the power of Love which fuels this opportunity, to do its creative work in, through and among us.
