It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society –Jiddu Krishnamurti
I saw a tweet today about Scott Morrison’s failure to commend Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, on his handling of the state’s Covid19 response. I shook my head as I thought about how, for much too long, many of our leaders here and abroad, have assumed the permanent function of infecting society with the pathogens of incivility, aggression, the toxic culture of blaming, hostile competition, divisiveness, deceit and of fear and smear mongering, to name but a few.
There was a time in my life when at least some of our leaders were regarded with much respect and whom children and young adults looked up to as role models. Those days seem so distant and faded now, a nostalgia whose sweetness is all but gone. Whatever fond impressions we may still retain of such leaders and times are under constant assault by the scandals and indiscretions that never fail to arise, sooner or later, around them.
Trust, respect, optimism and feeling inspired to act for the common good have long become casualties of a brand of politics that promotes rabid attack dog tactics often involving gaslighting and outright lying, wanton exploitation of the many by the few and a pernicious abuse of the law and legal systems. There was a time, though some may claim it hasn’t fully passed, when ‘leading by example’ wasn’t just considered desirable, it was mandatory.
If you feel a sense of deep disappointment and hopelessness seeping through you as you read this and as you reflect on the state of the world, I assure you, you’re not alone. And if you also feel that there’s not much or anything at all that you can do about it, again I assure you, you’re not alone.
But although many of us may feel that things are out of our control, I do want to assure you that there is something that we can all do. Indeed, it is where I believe we must all begin.
The practice of mindfulness brings us to the very clear realization of a number of things. Two of these are especially relevant with respect to our feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and loss of control:
One, that we have NO control over other people and other things, at least not in the way we would like to i.e. by bending them to the will of our Ego, its beliefs, demands and expectations.
Two, on the other hand, we do have immediate access to that which ultimately is the source and cause of all – the very force of life itself, the very field of consciousness, infinite, all-knowing and all-powerful. It is this access, our birthright, our inalienable right to heaven on earth, and all its power and goodness that enables us to transform ourselves and our world. It is by immersing ourselves in this state of consciousness again and again that we deny our personal and collective ego its proclivity to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.
