Sometimes I think that this mind-body can be such a clunky piece of equipment, prone to all kinds of breakdown and clumsiness. But that’s only because I haven’t learned to use it efficiently.
However, it’s not just because I haven’t learned to use it efficiently. It’s also, and perhaps mainly, because I’ve been taught to use it inefficiently, in ways that don’t really optimize its pretty amazing capabilities.
For instance, when was I taught to notice my thoughts without judging them and therefore without carrying the burden of wrongfulness or guilt or not-good-enoughness? Or to notice the sensations in my body and use them as feedback to help me course-correct?
When was I taught that neither my thoughts nor my sensations were either good or bad and that they did not make me either a good person or an evil person? Never, is the short answer. I learned it through my practice of meditation.
But here’s what’s really cool about this technology that we have, this mind-body that we carry around – our reality is fashioned by our thoughts and fueled by our emotions.
No matter what’s going on around us or within us, we can reset at any moment. We can choose another direction i.e. course correct. No matter how intense or severe or chronic the condition or circumstance we find ourselves in, the path to a new reality is literally a thought away.
The cup of coffee you drank didn’t materialize out of nothing. It had its origins in a thought you had about it. You’re reading this not because some outer force is pulling a string from which you dangle. No. You’re reading this because you’ve chosen to.
Now, we can use thought alone to force actions and outcomes. That’s the effortfulness of will-power. Or we can use thought fueled by our emotions which is a phenominally more efficient way of doing things. (I’m not telling you anything you haven’t experienced whether you’ve realized it or not).
Now, when we let the emotions of fear (which we feel in our body) fuel our thoughts, we travel a treacherous and effortful route of struggle, beating against the natural currents of life.
On the other hand, when we learn to allow the emotions of love to fuel our thoughts (which we also feel in our body), we give life permission to carry us effortlessly in its powerful flow.
