There is a silent rage within me

Something happened in Nevada in America on the weekend. It had to do with the Nevada Democratic State Convention and the finalizing of the number of delegates that would be accorded to each of the two democratic presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

I don’t wish to go into the details of what happened but in short, it could be described as a 13+ hour fiasco culminating in the rather brusque adjournment of the convention without the consent of the delegates by Roberta Lange, her rapid exit and the immediate positioning of police in the venue thereafter.

If you’d like a more complete account of this event, you can read it here. My response to it was as follows:

Unspeakably, repugnantly undemocratic. Many of the Sanders supporters would have had families and other commitments to attend to but stayed the arduously long and, in the end, unholy course.

There is a silent rage within me that I am certain connects with the rage in so many even while I sit here in Australia, miles away from you all. For me, it is to do with the fact that one person appears to have the bullying power to summarily dismiss the voice and will of so many.

It has also to do with the widely and justifiably held perception that this person (and others like her) has the backing of an unwieldy beast of a machine called the DNC which exists primarily to manage and prosecute the interests of a privileged few over the needs and rights of the deserving many. This is beyond reprehensible.

This malignant attack on democracy has been going on for too long and not just in America. The tragedy is that so many of us were asleep, lulled in a mindless, work-driven torpor as we were strategically drip-fed with petty ‘rewards’, ‘incentives’ and ‘insurance’ policies.

Now that we have awakened, the alternative, indeed the necessary, is clear to us and we know we must act with a conscience that has once again found its voice. We are grateful for one of the clearest and increasingly most listened to voices – that of Bernie Sanders. And together, in America and beyond, we must stand for what we know is true and good, not just for some, but for all.

In solidarity!
