NOTE:
In case you’re not familiar with the archetypes and metaphors that Rumi uses, the Seeker is one who is looking for the ultimate in life – truth and liberation. The Beloved is the Ultimate, the Transcendent, God, Infinite Intelligence, the Source, the Field or the Divine. We are all Seekers but that’s not all we are as Rumi so masterfully reveals to us.
In one of Rumi’s mystical poems, he captures the story of the Seeker. It goes something like this:
The Seeker knocks on the door of the Beloved and a voice asks: Who is it?
The Seeker replies, ‘It is I’.
The voice then says, ‘There is no room for both me and you’. And the door remains shut.
The Seeker goes away and after considerable time spent in meditation and other spiritual practices, he eventually returns and knocks on the door of the Beloved.
‘Who is it?’ asks a voice.
The Seeker replies, ‘It is you’.
And the door is opened.
I love this story that Rumi captures so beautifully in poetry (which I have paraphrased so as not to infringe any copyright). It tells us that the separation we perceive between ourselves and ‘god’ or Infinite Intelligence or the ‘Source’ and indeed between all else is a misperception.
There is no separation.
We are always and forever one with the Divine, with the Source. How can we not be? How can we ever be anything other than a part of ‘all there is’?
As we become more and more Self-Aware (through Meditation), we experience this Oneness and it gives us a very different perspective. It changes our sense of self. It doesn’t mean that we no longer see ourselves as individuals and even as separated individuals, we most likely do. However, this falsehood is confidently refuted by our personal experience of our impersonal Oneness. Or no-thing-ness.
We are therefore more inclined to see and experience ourselves as part of an infinite whole. We are far less likely to get too preoccupied with our old self-concepts of imperfection, inadequacy, unworthiness and limitation.
On the contrary, we are more likely to truly sense our wholeness, our limitlessness, our infinite possibility, our enduring innocence and our naturally radiant qualities of peace and joy. And, we are more likely to sense the same about others thus drawing us closer to them as the old conflicts between us are worn down by the truth of who we are.
