Who or what do you identify with?

Pessimism becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy; it reproduces itself by crippling our willingness to act – Howard Zinn

The words ‘I AM’ are the basis of all self-fulfilling prophecies. When we say or think or feel, ‘I am sick’, ‘I am not good at this’, ‘I am an optimist’, ‘I am a loser’, ‘I am addicted to sex’ and so on, we are not just accepting what we believe to be currently true, we are accepting what we believe to be forever true. To correct this kind of erroneous thinking, we must learn to use the words ‘I AM’ more thoughtfully, more consciously and more empoweringly.  In fact, it is necessary that we get into the habit of identifying with our true self which is pure Awareness, God, Infinite Intelligence, Love.

Our true self does not know limitation, it does not know anything that isn’t whole, true and unconditionally good. Most of us, however, have got into the habit of identifying with our personality self, our conditioned self, our Ego, which, to use Einstein’s words, is a ‘persistent illusion’. We have forgotten our true, impersonal identity in which we are not separated, we are incapable of being destroyed, enhanced or surpassed, we are infinite and eternal and in which there is simply no limitation.

No greater things are accomplished in the consciousness of personality. That is impossible, for personality is limiting from The Message of a Master

When we use the words ‘I AM’ and we use them while identifying with our personality self, we are setting ourselves up for ongoing failure, disappointment, hurt, poor health and so on. However, when we use the words ‘I AM’ while identifying with our true, impersonal self, we are acknowledging and stating our ongoing invulnerability, our capacity to achieve anything we imagine as well as our recognition of our unified, unbounded nature.

I AM not your human mind, nor its child, the intellect. They are but the expression of your Being, as you are the expression of My Being; they are but phases of your human personality, as You are a phase of My Divine Impersonality – Joseph Benner

For example, consider these words:

I am Love.

I am limitless.

I am powerful.

I am consciousness.

I am peace.

I am joy.

I am eternal.

If the Ego or personal self were to say these words, they would sound and feel hollow and unconvincing. However, when we enter into a different state of consciousness (something that meditation enables us to do) and we think these words, we can actually feel their undeniable truth. We will have stepped out of the individual, personal, separated self and become the unified, impersonal SELF.

When the mystic’s spiritual eye is opened, his physical eye is closed; he sees nothing but GodAbu Sulayman Ad-Darani

Spiritual masters through all the ages have exhorted us to step out of the personal, Ego self and step into the impersonal, unified SELF. Some people may do this by referring to the latter as God or Holy Spirit or You and the former as ‘I’. Some may choose to refer to it as Awareness. And some may choose not to ascribe it any name at all but simply allow themselves to fall into the gap between thoughts or imagine greater and greater states of spaciousness.

There are many ways in which we can shift from personal, Ego, conditioned consciousness to impersonal, unconditioned, limitless consciousness. The more we practice doing this, the weaker our identification with our Ego becomes and the stronger our identification with our true Self gets. We will find that as this happens, life becomes much easier, more hopeful, peaceful and joyous and our desires are more purely motivated by love rather than fear thus resulting in outcomes that are truly fulfilling, life-giving and for the good of all. The things that used to frighten, disappoint, anger or make us feel insecure no longer have such sway over us. On the rare occasions that they do tip us out of love consciousness, we are quickly able to step out of their force field and return ‘home’ to our true nature. It takes practice.

My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind – Albert Einstein

If you consider that you have been practising day after day, moment after moment, for several years –decades for most of us – being in your Ego consciousness, you might begin to appreciate why stepping into impersonal, Love, God consciousness will need practice. The remarkable thing is, you will not need as many years to see the results. They come about far more quickly and sometimes even instantly. However, it is necessary that we maintain this state of consciousness in order to continue to experience the results we want. And that is a moment-to-moment, lifelong practice.
