Think of meditation not as a pill for instant or short term relief though it might provide that. Think of meditation more like daily exercise whose immediate effects may be unattractive –
‘This feels hard, I’m not getting this right, My mind cannot stand still, It’s all over the place, This is making me more anxious’
But over time, you begin to see the results – more peace and calm for more of the time, different ways of looking at things, making sense of things, more acceptance, more compassion, more freedom, more creativity, more ease, way more ease, way less struggle.
As your awareness expands and you are able to observe both the behaviour of the conditioned mind and the nature of the unconditioned mind, you shift from the stranglehold of conditioning to the liberating and nourishing field of unconditioned and unconditional bliss. It is unconditional because it is available to you always and unconditionally. There is nothing you can do to deserve it or be denied it.
Now you realize that beneath the cloudspace of habitual thinking, feeling, reacting, judging, fearing, attaching and averting, there is the radiant blue sky, untouched by what is happening above it. Neither enhanced by it nor diminished by it. This is your true nature.
Indestructible
Unenhanceable
Unsurpassable
This is truth that you want to immerse yourself in, again and again, every day and many times a day. With practice, you tune into it more quickly, more easily, more eagerly.
It is in this truth that you realize your true, unearned, unlearned, limitless power. It is in this truth that you realize your natural limitlessness. It is in this truth that you experience the ease and flow and fullness of life. It is in this truth that you KNOW without any doubt that you are all that you have yearned to be – free, whole, joyous, abundant and limitless.
That’s what meditation offers you – the realization of your true nature.
You are the blue sky not the clouds.
REFLECTION
Do you have a meditation practice? Why or why not? If you do, how does it benefit you? Would you like to take your practice further? How would you like it to help you further?
If you don’t have a meditation practice, what might persuade you to start one?
CALL TO ACTION
If you haven’t already done so, join a Meditation circle. You might want to join mine. Also, consider keeping a Meditation journal in which you simply record what you noticed about your practice. Do not write about the content of your thoughts or feelings or sensations. Only your practice. For instance, you might say ‘I practised for 20 mins. I was reluctant to sit at first but I reminded myself that I had made a commitment. My mind got absorbed into thoughts and stories for most of my practice. When I did return to the present moment, I was shocked that I had been gone for so long. And then I felt disappointed with myself.‘ Finish with a note of encouragement such as: ‘I look forward to noticing more of my thoughts and feelings especially when I first notice that I’d been lost in my thoughts.’
HEALING STATEMENT
My mind is a mind of habit. My practice helps me cultivate habits that serve my highest good.
